Thinking of buying a used boat?
1. Palmers Cove Marina recommends that you invest in a prepurchase survey of the boat and motor.
2. The marine surveyor you contract with should be accredited by The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) or a similar professional organization. The survey will identify any issues with the boat (items that will cost money to fix above and beyond the purchase price of the boat).
3. The survey may prevent you from purchasing a boat with a rotten transom (uh, no) or a motor with zero compression in one cylinder.
4. Pricewise, do your homework; checkout NADA Guides, ABOS Marine Blue Book and similar publications to find out the approximate value of the boat/motor you are looking at based on its condition.
5. Consider this. A good deal for a used boat/motor is when the price paid for the used boat/motor, plus the cost of a new motor, still makes sense.
6. Usually, it doesn't.
What the heck are motor mounts?
These are motor mounts.
Motor mounts are aluminum structures encapsulated in rubber. There are two mounts-port and starboard. They are located here.
Motor mounts do the following:
1. Join the lower part of the motor to the mounting bracket which is bolted to the boat’s transom.
2. Absorb the force generated by the motor and transfer it to the boat.
3. Being somewhat flexible, they act as a shock absorber between the motor and the hull much like shock absorbers on a car.
Over time, motor mounts corrode and ultimately disintegrate.
Failing motor mounts cause the following problems - as the mounts corrode they expand-as they expand they push the motor out of alignment - i.e. the driveshaft and shift rod are no longer vertical. As a result, the shift rod will bind up causing hard shifting - and the driveshaft and shift rod seals will leak allowing water to enter the gear case causing the gear case to fail.
What are ten ways to kill my outboard motor?
1. Use the cheapest oil you can buy.
2. Forget to winterize it.
3. Play in the rocks.
4. Ignore all engine alarms.
5. "Tweak" the carburetors.
6. Let your friend "the mechanic" winterize it for "free".
7. Create furrows in the sand.
8. Use a gas/water mixture.
9. Add dry gas.
10. Replace the water pump after it has failed.
How do I choose the wrong boat for the "right" reasons?
1. It has a toilet.
2. It has carpeting.
3. It looks like "a good deal"
4. It has seats for eight.
5. "It doesn't need service."
6. It has a collapsible shower
7. It has plenty of cup holders
8. It has headlights.
9. Your neighbor says it is a "good deal".
10. It has an automobile engine with an outdrive.
